Hold on to your butts, this is a blog post of epic proportions…
Many years ago, I worked for the Village Hotel in Maidstone. In our sales office was Caroline, who did salesy stuff. We added each other on Facebook, as you do, and many years later I get a message from Caroline saying she is getting married and would I be free to photograph her wedding. Needless to say I was.
Villa Carlotta, on Lake Como in Italy was to be the venue for Caroline and Johns Wedding. I do love a destination wedding, and being a photographer at a venue you haven’t shot at before is exciting as it is. The beautiful villa was built at the end of 17th century by the Milanese marquis Giorgio Clerici in a natural basin between lake and mountains, facing the dolomite Grignas and the peninsula of Bellagio. The gardens at Villa Carlotta are world renowned and owe their reputation to the rhododendrons’ and azaleas’ spring flowering, consisting of over 150 different sorts.
Lake Como is a wedding photographers dream, everywhere you turn is like a postcard and having a wedding out there seems like a perfect place to start your married life. Caroline and John were helped to plan their special day, but the lovely Aurora. Aurora runs Lake Como Weddings and Events and was incredibly friendly and helpful all day. She even gave me a lift to the wedding venue, although I have to admit Italians are crazy drivers!
Caroline and John both got ready at Hotel St Giorgio, a beautiful hotel on the banks of Lake Como. From there the wedding party took a boat ride round to Villa Carlotta which is where the ceremony took place overlooking both the lake and the stunning mountain ranges. The ceremony was followed by a champagne boat tour of Lake Como, and we passed some beautiful villas such as Villa Balbianello, which has been used for filming James Bond and Star Wars. Whilst the bridal party headed on up to the reception venue, Al Velu in Lenno, Caroline, John and I walked along to Parco Meyer. Parco Meyer is also another beautiful and secluded wedding venue on Lake Como and has a lovely grandstand and fountain in the middle of it.
We finished off our day at the lovely Al Veluu Ristorante, which I would say boasts some of the best views of the area. Set up in the mountainside itself, you can see all across the lake. The meal, speeches and dancing were all held outside and as the light faded the candles set a really beautiful ambiance for the evening.
Caroline and John have the most amazing families. It’s clear to anyone who knows them that they are madly in love with each other and they have two beautiful daughters who are an absolute credit to them. I thouroughly enjoyed being their wedding photographer and everybody made me feel so at home.
So enough chit chat from me, I found it incredibly hard to cut down on the amount of photos in this blog post. Cutting it down just didn’t do the wedding justice, so this is a long one. Enjoy!
